So, a while ago I became a little (majorly) obsessed with broadway musicals. Little Shop of Horrors (indisputably the greatest musical ever. seriously, don’t even try arguing with me on that) lead me to Alan Menken which lead me to Newsies which lead me to Jeremy Jordan which lead me to Bonnie & Clyde which lead me to… this song:
How fun is that? “Pretty fun” is the answer.
I’ve always had an affinity for musicals. I know everyone thinks this way about their own childhood but I actually for real grew up during the greatest period of kids films. Beauty and the Beast is still my favourite movie ever and it also happens to be a fantastic musical in its own right. Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Little Shop of Horrors, Grease, Chicago,Jungle Book, Hairspray, Enchanted, Tangled. Movie musicals exist in a special kind of reality. They have that romantic charm of the golden age of cinema and the theatrical artifice of old Hollywood. There’s just something inherently magical about them and I love that. Me and musicals were meant to be.
It was about a year ago I first listened to the songs of Bonnie & Clyde and they’ve been tumbling around my head ever since, gestating and forming themselves into scenes and shots. I actually wanted to animate another song from the show for my last assignment but my mentor vetoed the idea suggesting I attempt something less broad. It was a good call at the time and I’m glad for it. But I’ve done that now and I think I’m ready to give this a crack. Wish me luck.
